Welcome to our latest blog post, where we shine the spotlight on an incredible young talent and her supportive family!

We’re thrilled to introduce you to Alayah Jenkins, a remarkable 9-year-old author whose boundless imagination and creativity have brought her characters to life in a way that’s capturing hearts everywhere. Alongside her mother, Ashlee Jenkins, Alayah has transformed her everyday experiences into exciting adventures through her book series, The Little Agent.

In this blog, we’re exploring Alayah’s impressive achievement of becoming a published author at such a young age. Her animated stories, which feature her adventurous alter ego LayJ, also known as Agent 3, her mom, also known as Agent 11, twin brother and sister “The Letter Twins,” and dad, known as Agent 10, are now part of the Playwatch Kids collection and are available on the JASON Digital Platform.

These engaging stories not only entertain but also impart valuable life lessons and encourage children to navigate their own challenges with resilience and good character. Join us as we explore Alayah’s creative process, the support of her family, and what makes The Little Agent a unique addition to our educational content.

Alayah’s Journey as a Young Author

Q: Alayah, what inspired you to start writing your own stories?

“I was being bullied in school, and I wanted a positive way to get my feelings out because I was having a bunch of them at that time. So, my positive way was writing… I find the experience I think is the most important, and then I write about that certain one.”

Alayah began writing her own stories as a positive outlet during a difficult time when she was being bullied at school. Writing allowed her to express her emotions constructively. She started by sharing her stories with her mother, who recognized the talent and potential in her work, leading to the creation of a publishing company, SRIES Collective Inc. Alayah draws inspiration from her personal experiences, focusing on what she believes is most important and turning those moments into stories.

Q: Can you tell us more about LayJ and how she reflects your personality?

“LayJ represents me because she’s like a cool kid, and I think that I’m a cool kid… She shows resiliency by keeping up. She keeps on bouncing back from the Itchy Monster, and she always battles him, and she just gets through it.”

LayJ, the character created by Alayah, loves going on adventures with family and friends and enjoys having fun. LayJ embodies qualities that Alayah values, such as having a “lionheart” and showing resilience. One example of this resilience is how LayJ continuously battles and overcomes challenges like cavities and bullying, always bouncing back no matter what.

Q: What is it like working together on Little Agent?

Alayah: “It’s fun getting to see everything come together and getting to see all these amazing people and their stories… it’s like a dream come true.”

Ashlee: “It’s a lot of work, but it doesn’t feel like work because we enjoy it so much… It’s been awesome. We enjoy recording together, and it’s just a fun experience.”

Ashlee, her mother, also shared that as Alayah gets older, she’s becoming more hands-on with the project, making the experience even more rewarding and enjoyable for both of them.

Q: What do you hope other kids will learn from Little Agent LayJ?

“I hope that they learned that being a bully isn’t a nice thing and that they’re not alone in the world… I hope that adults learn that this is very important to children and that they learn themselves not to be a bully.”

Q: How does it feel to see your stories and animations on the JASON Learning platform?

“It’s amazing and super cool getting to see my animations and stories on another platform… other than my bedroom.”

Q: Do you have any new adventures planned for Lay J?

“I have several more adventures planned, ranging from birthday party bashes to family reunion fun and stinky shirts.”

As we wrap up our spotlight on Alayah Jenkins and her captivating series, The Little Agent, it’s clear that her journey embodies the very essence of JASON Learning’s mission. Alayah’s ability to transform everyday experiences into imaginative missions not only showcases her creativity but also aligns perfectly with our goal of inspiring and educating young learners from all backgrounds. Her stories encourage kids to explore their world, tackle challenges with courage, and develop a strong sense of character—all key values we strive to foster through our programs.

Houston GoalHackers: An Inspiring Argonaut Expedition! https://jason.org/houston-goalhackers/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 14:01:18 +0000 https://jason.org/?p=12036 From insightful sessions with top NASA scientists to hands-on activities at the Limitless Space Institute and impactful projects with the Galveston Bay Foundation, this expedition was a blend of learning, innovation, and real-world problem-solving.

The post Houston GoalHackers: An Inspiring Argonaut Expedition! appeared first on JASON Learning.

]]>
Our last group of 2024 Argonauts touched down in Houston, TX, on July 15, 2024, for the exciting expedition called “Houston GoalHackers: A Design Thinking Expedition for Future Entrepreneurs.” This journey was packed with inspiration, hands-on activities, and real-world problem-solving, all set against the backdrop of Houston’s innovative spirit.

Day One: A Rocket-Fueled Kickoff with Monica Lee

The Argonauts kicked off the adventure with an incredible session featuring Monica Lee, a NASA scientist and the Assistant Vice President of Cybersecurity Enablement at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Monica’s career is truly extraordinary! From serving as the Chief of Staff at Johnson Space Center to logging over 3,000 hours in NASA’s Mission Control Center, her career spans an impressive range of experiences. Plus, she’s managed space contracts worth over $4.4 billion and has her research published at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. Her story left our Argonauts buzzing with excitement and ready to tackle whatever challenges come their way.

Exploring the Future of Space Travel at Limitless Space Institute

Next up, our Argonauts visited the Limitless Space Institute and met the brilliant Dr. Harold “Sonny” White. Known for his groundbreaking work in advanced propulsion systems, Dr. White blew everyone’s minds with his talk about the future of space travel. From exploring alternatives to rocket fuel to the mind-bending idea of warping space for interstellar journeys (hello, “Star Trek”), he showed our Argonauts just how exciting space science can be.

Then came the fun part: a challenge-based activity led by Chaka Jaliwa, Deputy of Education and Operations at Limitless Space. The Argonauts built and raced Solar Sails, competing to see who could “go the distance” the fastest. It was a hands-on, action-packed experience that combined learning with a healthy dose of friendly competition.

Goal Hacking with the Galveston Bay Foundation

The Houston Argonauts dove deep into their “Goal Hacking” expedition, focusing on helping organizations achieve their goals. One of their key partners is the Galveston Bay Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving the Galveston Bay ecosystem. Before arriving in Houston, the Argonauts watched videos from the Foundation to get a feel for its mission and how they could collaborate.

This week, they got up close and personal with the Foundation through a presentation on their oyster shell recycling program. They learned how this program supports bay health and reduces erosion. Then, it was off to Galveston Bay, where the Argonauts bagged oyster shells for restoration projects and explored the bay’s ecosystem through seine fishing. Despite the relentless mosquitoes at Galveston Bay, the Argonauts were troopers and pressed on with their work.

The day wrapped up with a visit to Tommy’s Restaurant, where the owner’s son, Nick Tollett, a champion of oyster shell recycling, showed the Argonauts how the shells are processed to rebuild reef habitats. It was a behind-the-scenes look at how sustainable practices can protect marine life and ensure a healthy supply of oysters for future generations.

A Trip to the NASA Neutral Buoyancy Lab

No visit to Houston would be complete without a trip to NASA! The Argonauts spent some time at the incredible NASA Neutral Buoyancy Lab. While they missed seeing astronauts in action due to a canceled event, they still got a fascinating look at the lab and watched divers gear up. Hosts Drew Hood and two NASA interns shared their journeys from middle school to their current roles at NASA, offering insider tips and advice on pursuing a career in space science.

Crafting Design Thinking Presentations

Since May, our amazing Houston Argonauts have been hard at work on their Design Thinking Presentations. In a whirlwind “speed mentoring” session, the Argonaut teams presented their Goal Hacker solutions to university professors, graduate students, and a JASON Argonaut Alumni. Each team received valuable feedback and rotated through four different mentors for diverse perspectives.

After these rapid 15-minute sessions, each team had a 45-minute session with one mentor to refine their projects and presentation skills. They were gearing up for their final presentation before an audience of about 25 people!

Special thanks to our incredible mentors (left to right):

 • Dr. Omah Williams-Duncan
 • Cassandra Phenix
 • Festus Fajuyigbe
 • Carol C. Waters, EdD
 • Eloy Sanchez, Jr.
 • Mary Curtis, Ph.D.

Throughout the expedition, the Argonauts stayed at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, making it their home away from home. Most of the classroom activities took place on the UHCL campus, where they also ate, slept, and lived. After their presentations, they even had the opportunity to tour the university, getting a taste of campus life and experiencing the collegiate level academic environment firsthand.

The Houston GoalHackers expedition has been an unforgettable experience, full of learning, inspiration, and hands-on STEM. Our Argonauts are not only soaking up knowledge but also making meaningful contributions to the community and the environment. See photos of the 2024 Houston Argonauts below!

In June 2024, the JASON Argonauts embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Madera Canyon, nestled in the Sonoran Desert south of Tucson, Arizona.

This year’s expedition, “Sky Islands BioQuest: Exploring Arizona’s Bug Diversity Amid Climate Change,” was all about hands-on, inquiry-driven research in one of the most unique ecosystems in the world.

This expedition was led by Jude Kesl, JASON Argonaut Expedition Leader, and two passionate entomologists, Kristie Reddick, M.S. and Jessica Honaker, M.S., aka “The Bug Chicks.” The Bug Chicks are renowned for designing and conducting original research on arthropods and the effects of climate change on desert ecosystems, bringing their expertise to enrich the Argonauts’ exploration.

The Argonauts explored desert biodiversity and dove into several fascinating projects. They studied water-dependent bird diversity, explored how pigments affect scorpion fluorescence, and examined how water influences sycamore leaf density and the soil’s biotic components. This hands-on research wasn’t just about learning facts; it was about truly experiencing science in action.

One of the standout moments was the Argonauts’ visit to Biosphere 2, where they saw the challenges of recreating and sustaining ecosystems for space travel. They also had the unique opportunity to learn from David Tenario, Assistant Supervisor at the San Xavier District Natural Resources Department and a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation, about efforts to restore riparian habitats, emphasizing the real-world importance of conservation.

Throughout the expedition, the Argonauts tried delicious southwestern food, stayed at the breathtaking Santa Rita Experimental Range (SRER) field station, and discovered an array of beautiful and bizarre plants, insects, and wildlife. One highlight was an awe-inspiring astronomy lesson under the stars on the summer solstice!

As the week wrapped up, each research group presented their findings through engaging presentations, which they’ll share with their schools and communities back home. After enduring the blazing desert heat (up to 114 degrees Fahrenheit), the Argonauts experienced the season’s first monsoon, adding a dramatic and refreshing end to their adventure in Arizona.

Argonaut expeditions go beyond exploration and research. They’re about personal growth, sparking wonder and joy, and forging connections and memories that last a lifetime. For more information about the JASON Argonaut Program, visit https://jason.org/argonauts/

Written by Arnulgo Moreno, Communications Manager at ReMA

The ReMA-JASON Learning partnership promotes career opportunities in the recycled materials industry and expands knowledge and awareness of recycled materials’ impact and outputs.

Mary Hlepas, VP of Purchasing for Imperial Group/Aluminum-Minerva, former ReMA Northern Ohio Chapter president, and current scholarship chair, has led the chapter to collectively sponsor a school with JASON Learning — Springfield Local Schools. ReMA News had the opportunity to talk with Mary and learn how that process played out.

How did you get into the recycled materials industry?

I started in 2001. I was hired as an executive assistant by a shredding facility. The company grew and bought two melting facilities. As the company grew, I saw opportunities for me to get more involved in helping the buyers, and this is how I started to learn the grades of aluminum and eventually became a buyer.

The company went bankrupt in 2009, and that’s when Imperial Zinc — part of Imperial Group — purchased the melting side of the company. They hired me as a buyer, and I have not looked back since.

How did you get involved with ReMA?

After my first year working for Imperial Group, I wanted a better understanding of our industry other than just the consumer side. I felt I would be a stronger buyer with better insight into the big picture. I also realized that becoming involved would allow more networking opportunities. If I had a better understanding of what the suppliers needed to do to prepare their material to sell to us, it would help me with my objectives. So, I asked my superiors if I could become involved with ISRI (now ReMA) locally.

I joined the Northern Ohio Chapter in 2010. Once I joined the board, it got in my blood. I just finished my last term as past president for the chapter and now serve on the board of directors as non-ferrous secretary. I have met so many amazing people and learned so many things I never would have if I had not become involved. It is unbelievable how much is open and available to us when we put forth the effort.

How did getting involved with ReMA lead to JASON Learning?

As previously stated, I got involved on a local level.

I learned about JASON Learning by attending the national board meetings. I was on one or two of the judging panels for the recycling contest that they have yearly for the kids using the JASON Learning program. I was extremely impressed by what these kids learned and did at a young age and their understanding of recycling.

Last month, during training for the board of directors, the ReMA executive board brought up the JASON Learning programs available and how our chapters/regions could help locally. Eric Phillips, Northern Ohio Chapter president, and I looked at each other and said we must make this happen. The schools are facing funding cuts. We must get more involved on a local level.

I am so proud of our industry, but I do not feel that people understand what we do. We can begin educating kindergarten students through high school about proper recycling and shout on the highest mountain all the opportunities our industry offers. In that case, it will help our industry find people to work in it. There is just so much outreach and lessons that we need to teach, and Eric and I just thought that JASON Learning would be a great start.

What was the process like sponsoring Springfield Local Schools?

I went to the chapter board and presented the information we received at the board of directors meeting about JASON Learning. We already run a scholarship program, but I thought we could build and enhance it into a learning program. They liked the idea and approved it.

Once the board’s approval was received, I called JASON Learning. I spoke with Matt, and he explained the process to me. Then he got a phone call within the next day or two and emailed me that Springfield had this program, but their budget was frozen four years ago. JASON Learning was one of the few programs they would have to cut because they could not fund it anymore. I heard that and immediately thought, here is the school utilizing the program; the kids love it, and they will take it away. That is an easy decision. That is how we chose the school. We met with them, and it was one of the most rewarding Zoom calls I have ever experienced. They were so appreciative, so excited, that we were able to help them for one more year.

Northern Ohio Scholarship Committee plans to add a school funding program with its scholarship fund. Our events will also include raising funds to continue with JASON Learning. We are also exploring other fundraising opportunities to continue supporting our schools in our Northern Ohio area.

How would you encourage other members of chapters to get involved with JASON Learning?

I would encourage them to call JASON Learning, take a half-hour, and learn about the various programs available. They have four or five different programs depending on the type of financial commitment. These programs can work through the regions/chapters, but if it is not feasible, they can bring this information to their members. Members are also able to do internships with JASON Learning.

I would also encourage them to get involved on a local level…local schools, career days, community fairs, and even local governments. Networking in our communities to educate them on our industry and all the tools we have IS the best way to continue growing our fantastic industry.

Discovering the power of education to transform lives often begins with a single spark. For Mr. Edward (Ed) Toman, Superintendent of Mercer County Schools in West Virginia, that spark ignited over 15 years ago when he first encountered JASON Learning. Today, Ed stands as a champion of STEM literacy, thanks to his unwavering dedication and integrating JASON Learning programs into the curriculum of Mercer County Schools.

Join us as we delve into Ed Toman’s inspiring journey and explore how JASON Learning has become a cornerstone in his mission to empower students through STEM.

Curious about how he first connected with JASON Learning and what drew him to the program, we asked Ed to reminisce about his journey. He shared one memory that stands out vividly. It was an evening in 2010 at Glenville State University, where he was working as a JASON Director and Hidden Promise Coordinator. Ed had the opportunity to have dinner with his wife and Dr. Robert (Bob) Ballard, the founder of JASON Learning and a researcher most known for his discovery of the RMS Titanic. His wife complimented Dr. Ballard on his Mickey Mouse watch, to which Dr. Ballard casually responded, “Walt Disney gave this to me.”

This unexpected connection left a lasting impression on Ed, underscoring the profound impact of mentorship and personal connections in education and beyond. This event was also when Ed first met Dr. Eleanor Smalley, the current President and CEO of JASON Learning. Since then, Ed has been a passionate advocate for integrating JASON into all areas of education, believing it to be essential for sparking student interest and making real-life connections across all subjects.

Strong leadership is crucial in transforming education, and superintendents like Ed Toman serve as powerful role models in this journey. His dedication, passion, and vision inspire both educators and students to reach new heights.

Dr. Eleanor Smalley, President and CEO of JASON Learning

Mercer County Schools have fully embraced JASON Learning, implementing it across all 25 schools, tech centers, and even preschools, reaching about 1,200 staff and 8,500 students. As a cross-curricular program, JASON Learning seamlessly integrates into any classroom, making it easy for districts to incorporate STEM principles throughout their entire curriculum. This comprehensive adoption has earned Mercer County the coveted AASA/JASON STEM Certification, highlighting their outstanding accomplishments in STEM education (read more here).

JASON keeps me focused on today and tomorrow and our future more than how we were taught in the old days. Things are changing, and without JASON, schools are lacking.

Ed Toman

A dedicated STEM Core Team led by Dr. Ernie Adkins, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools, works hard to integrate JASON Learning into all subjects and monitor their progress towards becoming a more STEM-enriched district.

Rhonda Rogers, Title I Supervisor, leads these efforts in elementary schools, while Angie Grosclose, Secondary Education Supervisor, oversees secondary schools. Additionally, eight certified JASON Coaches support teachers by providing training and promoting hands-on STEM activities in classrooms. This approach has significantly increased the use of JASON, with 1,223 participants (some attending multiple times) in JASON training in the 2023-24 school year alone.

One of MCS’s primary schools is using some JASON resources about recycling and water cleanup for a Title 1 parent night in April. It will be composed of stations with different learning activities and partners within the community. To continue working with the community, they are coming up with a plan of having the school as a recycling station and also other ways to keep our water clean.

As we continue our units within the elementary grade levels, other teachers are taking notice and want in on the action. Even though we didn’t aim our lessons at the primary grade levels, they are now more curious about JASON Learning. Throughout the spring, we will be focusing on lessons to inspire the primary teachers.

Kaila Hardin, a JASON Coach at Mercer County Schools

Mercer County Schools’ commitment to STEM education is evident in their participation in the 2023 JASON National Conference, where they brought 33 staff members. This year, they have 21 educators planning on attending the annual event. By participating in JNC, teachers and administrators gain exposure to the latest STEM education strategies, resources, and best practices, as well as provide a platform for Mercer County leaders to network with others and bring back fresh ideas that can further enhance their district’s educational approach. JNC inspired them to participate in the annual ReMA/JASON Youth Recycling Contest, leading to 437 out of 560 participating students coming from Mercer County.

JASON Learning is an expedition in STEM education. We see ourselves as Argonauts on a thrilling adventure to discover real science, technology, engineering, and math. By using role models and real data, we provide authentic examples that inspire and educate. Mercer County Schools exemplify this spirit by integrating STEM into every corner of their instruction, setting a benchmark for how dynamic and engaging education can be.

Dr. Eleanor Smalley, President and CEO of JASON Learning

Ed’s involvement with JASON Learning has also facilitated connections with superintendents across the country, offering him fresh perspectives and ideas to improve his district. In a previous role as Superintendent of Wetzel County Schools, Ed embarked on a JASON Argonaut Expedition to Silicon Valley, California, with a board member. They toured Facebook, Apple, Google, and Stanford Design School, inspiring themselves and student Argonauts to envision transformative changes in their schools.

JASON Argonaut Expedition Leader, Jude Kesl, plays a crucial role in these adventures, pushing participants to explore beyond their comfort zones and gain experiences of a lifetime. Mercer County Schools celebrates its Argonauts with a wall of memorabilia (shown below), showcases them at community events, and allows them to speak at board meetings, underscoring the importance and excitement of STEM education within the district.

Since his involvement with JASON Learning, Ed has led 11 expeditions and supported 30 Argonauts, including students, teachers, himself, and a board member. These expeditions span diverse locations, from the Amazon Rainforest to MIT and Silicon Valley. The Argonauts who have had the opportunity to be Argonauts thanks to Ed are listed below:

 • GSC JASON Consortium – Sara Mullins
 • Amazon – Haley Feldmeier, Aubrey Neff, Leslie Lively
 • Malaysia – Brittany Mason, Travis McCoy, Sharon Snider
 • Silicon Valley – Jeromy Kelch, Cole Henderson, (BOE Amy Cooley, Supt Ed Toman)

Ed’s engagement extends to the AASA/JASON STEM Consortium, which started in 2016. Through the consortium, he connected with Dr. Bernadine Futrell, now Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education. Their relationship has been instrumental in planning educational trips and events. In 2024, Mercer County Schools took over 60 students on two separate trips to various HBCU colleges on the East Coast—one to visit Dr. Futrell in Washington D.C. as well as Howard University and Coppin State University and another trip to visit Livingstone College and Benedict College.

Ed Toman’s journey with JASON Learning exemplifies the profound impact of innovative STEM educational programs. Through his leadership and unwavering commitment, Mercer County Schools continue to inspire and prepare students for a dynamic future. His efforts have not only transformed the educational landscape in his district but have also set a benchmark for other districts to follow!

By fostering a culture in Mercer County Schools of curiosity, hands-on learning, and real-world application, Ed has ensured that students and teachers are consumers of knowledge and active creators and innovators.

As Ed continues to advocate for STEM education, his legacy will undoubtedly influence countless educators and students, proving that one individual’s dedication can indeed spark a revolution in lifelong learning.
