NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASHBURN, VA (April 9, 2024)—JASON Learning, in collaboration with ROC and Doddridge County Schools (DCS) in West Virginia, has developed a new localized artificial intelligence (AI) curriculum, “Trustworthy AI: Computer Vision Essentials,” designed to immerse students in the realms of AI, machine learning, computer vision, and ethical considerations in AI development.

As AI technologies increase across industries, students with a foundational understanding of computer vision and machine learning will be better equipped to enter fields such as computer science, engineering, data analysis, and artificial intelligence development.

Scott Cochran, Principal of Doddridge County High School

According to Cochran, teaching the basic and applied concepts of AI in high schools provides an opportunity to discuss the ethical and social implications of AI technologies. Students can explore topics such as bias in AI algorithms, privacy concerns, and the impact of AI on society. By fostering discussions around these issues, high schools can help students develop a well-rounded understanding of AI and its implications.

The curriculum is available on the JASON Digital Platform and is currently being implemented at Doddridge County High School in the Business Computer Applications class. The collaboration aims to expand its reach to partner with school districts nationwide for broader adoption in the Fall of 2024.

Learning about AI and understanding how things like facial recognition and biometrics work in the real world has opened my eyes to the ways technology influences our daily lives and how we can utilize it in various industries. Just knowing how to leverage AI makes me feel like I’m steps ahead of the game and gives me a leg up when applying for jobs.

Student from Doddridge County High School

Featuring industry experts from ROC as role models, the curriculum integrates real-world examples, storytelling, and practical insights to enhance students’ comprehension of AI and its practical applications.

Each module in Trustworthy AI: Computer Vision Essentials is facilitated by specially designed educator support materials:

  • An “Educator Prep” section complete with directions and supplemental resources
  • Interdisciplinary Connections
  • Relevant and engaging videos and web links
  • Rubrics for students content

As AI and computer vision concepts proliferate throughout our daily lives, it’s critical that we develop the next generation of developers, engineers, and thought leaders who understand how these technologies work and have the vocabulary to make informed decisions about how, when, and where we choose to deploy them.

Scott Swann, CEO of ROC

JASON Learning, a pioneer in STEM education for over three decades, is committed to democratizing STEM education and nurturing future STEM leaders. The “Trustworthy AI” curriculum is available to all of JASON’s partner school districts across the country.

JASON Learning is set to showcase the “Trustworthy AI” curriculum and offer a professional development workshop during its upcoming 2024 National Conference on July 1-2 in Leesburg, VA.

The theme of this year’s event, “Trailblazers of Tomorrow: Innovation in STEM,” is tailored for K-12 educators, administrators, and school leaders aiming to foster an entrepreneurial mindset and empower both students and educators to pave the way for the future. Scott Swann, CEO of ROC, will deliver a keynote address at the conference, highlighting “Trustworthy AI.”

Since 2020, Doddridge County Schools, in partnership with JASON Learning, has spearheaded localized curricula tailored to industry demands, aiming to bridge the gap between education and workforce needs. This initiative empowers students with practical skills and career insights, fostering academic and career success.

It’s important for us to introduce our students to not only private industries, but to the heads of those industries and the people who work in those industries, so they can look up to them as role models, to learn from them, but also so that they can walk right out of Doddridge County High School and into a real-world position.

Adam Cheeseman, Superintendent of Doddridge County Schools

The localized curriculum approach adopted by JASON Learning and DCS has yielded significant benefits and tangible outcomes for students in Doddridge County. Several high school students who enjoyed and excelled in the localized curricula have seamlessly transitioned from their educational experiences to secure internships or have been directly hired by the very companies featured in the curriculum. This is a testament to the effectiveness of the localized approach and the value placed on students’ abilities by local businesses.

Through continued collaboration and a shared commitment to educational innovation, JASON Learning, ROC, and Doddridge County Schools are laying the foundation for the next generation of trailblazers in STEM education and beyond.

Stay tuned for updates on this transformative AI education initiative.

NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(ASHBURN, VA) April 5th, 2024—JASON Learning is thrilled to announce that it will be conducting two exciting Argonaut Expeditions in 2024, taking place in Madera Canyon, Arizona, and Houston, Texas.

JASON Argonaut Expeditions are one of the most sought-after opportunities in the world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education—only available to select students and teachers from JASON’s Argonaut partner school districts.

JASON Argonauts—named after the band of explorers in Greek mythology who accompanied the hero Jason in his quest to retrieve the Golden Fleece—work directly with JASON Learning scientists, engineers, and other inspiring STEM role models, assisting them on field expeditions, joining them in their lab or office, or being mentored by them remotely.

The first expedition for 2024, “Sky Islands BioQuest: Exploring Arizona’s Bug Diversity Amid Climate Change,” will occur in June in Madera Canyon, Arizona. The expedition will be led by two entomologists, The Bug Chicks, who have previously led expeditions to the Amazon Rainforest and Costa Rica. They design and conduct original research on arthropods and the effects of climate change on desert ecosystems. The Sky Islands BioQuest Argonauts will delve into desert biodiversity and study the impact of climate change on the local ecosystem.

The Argonaut Expedition is our favorite week of the year! We lead students and teachers through the process of science, from observation/inquiry and experimental design to the effective communication of data and results.  It’s a week of identifying personal strengths, overcoming setbacks in the field and celebrating successes.

Being an Argonaut is a transformative experience, and we all return with a sense of wonder about our planet and the resilient people who work to conserve it. Argonauts build friendships that last a lifetime and become part of an incredible STEM community.

Kristie Reddick and Jessica Honaker, Entomologists & Educators (aka The Bug Chicks)

In mid-July 2024, the second expedition, “Houston GoalHackers: A Design Thinking Expedition for Future Entrepreneurs,” will take place in Houston, Texas. Students and teachers will explore design thinking, innovation, and entrepreneurship through a new JASON curriculum called “Goal Tracker” from JASON and NCSU’s Design & Pitch Challenges in STEM.

The Goal Tracker challenge challenges participants to design a business that helps users change unwanted behaviors or develop new healthy habits through tracking and visualizing their progress. Argonauts will have the opportunity to share their challenge solutions and get feedback from STEM professionals on the Houston GoalHackers expedition.

I am excited to again lead groups of students and teachers on a journey of discovery and innovation through the 2024 Argonaut expeditions! These expeditions provide a way for students to explore STEM education, learn how to tackle real-world challenges, and make a better world.

Jude Kesl, JASON Argonaut Expedition Leader

The JASON Argonaut program offers a unique opportunity for select students and teachers to travel to research locations around the world and work side-by-side with scientists and engineers, many of whom they have come to know through JASON’s curricula. Argonauts will not only gain valuable knowledge but also contribute to real-world scientific endeavors.

For the 2023 Argonaut Expeditions, Argonauts conducted original research with The Bug Chicks in Costa Rica, studied climate change in Acadia National Park, Maine, and learned about design thinking and entrepreneurship through the lens of recycling in Houston, Texas

Educational exploration lies at the heart of JASON Learning’s mission. JASON’s Argonaut Expeditions embody our commitment to empowering the next generation of STEM leaders through hands-on experiences that inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love for learning.

Dr. Eleanor Smalley, President and CEO of JASON Learning

The application process for the Argonaut program is highly competitive, requiring an essay and video demonstration of character, dedication, academic prowess, communication skills, and a passion for STEM. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASHBURN, VA (March 15, 2024)—JASON Learning, a non-profit organization committed to promoting equitable STEM education, has joined forces with Playwatch Kids, an edutainment platform that centers around diverse children’s content. This groundbreaking partnership will see JASON Learning hosting a vast array of Playwatch Kids’ content on the JASON Digital Platform while also collaborating to develop new, engaging, and inclusive educational material.

Known for captivating children’s attention with compelling narratives where every child is the hero, Playwatch Kids aims to inspire and stimulate young minds through exciting animated content with diverse characters, including My Friend T, Gabby Galactic, Chiu, Malar, Kembe, and more!

We are so excited to be in partnership with JASON Learning! Together we want to create safe, fun and engaging content. Together with JASON, we feel we can truly make a historical impact across the nation. Our goal is to allow every child of every race and background to see themselves for inspiration and self belief.

Jimmy Jenkins, Co-Founder of Playwatch Kids

While today’s student population is increasingly diverse, the diversity within educational content is not keeping pace. The availability gap of diverse and multicultural children’s content remains a pressing issue in today’s learning materials. Despite the growing recognition of the importance of representation and inclusivity in curricula and education, there continues to be a significant lack of curricula that reflect the rich tapestry of identities and experiences within society.

This gap not only limits children’s exposure to various perspectives and cultures but also hinders their ability to see themselves reflected in the content they consume. Students of color and students from low-income backgrounds continue to be underrepresented and underserved in educational settings. Addressing this gap is crucial in empowering children from all backgrounds to embrace their unique identities and fostering a more inclusive and understanding learning environment that meets the social, emotional, and academic needs of students.

Simply teaching about DEIA [Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility] is not enough. We must actively create STEM content that is inclusive and diverse. One of my favorite quotes is ‘You can’t be what you can’t see’ [by Marian Wright Edelman]. Students must see people who look like them to give them a sense of value and belonging in STEM.

Dr. Eleanor Smalley, President and CEO of JASON Learning

By integrating Playwatch Kids’ content into its platform, JASON Learning is poised to address this gap and enhance the accessibility of high-quality, representational STEM education for students nationwide. Several Playwatch Kids videos are currently featured on the JASON Digital Platform, and we expect to have an additional 50 videos with teacher guidance ready for access by June 2024.

Notably, this collaboration places a special emphasis on early childhood education, ensuring that our youngest learners see themselves reflected in the world of STEM. JASON, with the support of Playwatch Kids, is in the process of creating a new module for JASON’s Early Childhood STEM Program focused on the Science of Reading. This unit will delve into the essential components of early literacy, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

JASON Learning’s dedication to fostering inclusive STEM learning experiences is exemplified by its longstanding practice of incorporating diverse role models into its curriculum. This strategic alliance with Playwatch Kids underscores a shared commitment to promoting representation in STEM careers across all educational levels.

Together, Playwatch Kids and JASON Learning are set to redefine educational content delivery. This partnership marks a significant step towards creating a more diverse and equitable learning environment for future generations.
